Tuesday PM - Intro to Digital Photography
NQ Multimedia

Introduced each other as 2 infill students had joined the class and I did not know all of their names as had only had them on 2 occasions. Talked about what their expectations were from the unit. Difference between snaps and creations for the units. Divided students into 3 main groups who worked in pairs. One group had to find what they considered good quality, well composed photos for groups of people, one for objects and one for landscapes. Reflected on the photos they had found. Students used the cameras in 2 groups and took people photos. I demo'd hot to use photoshop to import, rotate, adjust levels, save. I also demo'd difference between enhancement and manipulation.

Evaluation: Students were much more engaged when they found images epitomising good composition than when I normally showed. Very pleased with themselves and found superb examples of good composition over the 3 genres. Students enjoyed taking their own photos and emulated a great deal of what they had seen. Also wanted to enhance. Keen to learn more to carry out enhancement. Very successful lesson.
Tuesday AM - Guidance - HNC

Students completed their on line Progress Diary for the block.
All students who attended now appear to be in Moodle

Evaluation: Entries very light
Monday 27 November - PM
HNC Audio Visual Unit

Start of the new unit. Introduced unit and gave examples of last year's work. Explained that assessment would be what they wished to make it with certain parameters. Gave overview of Premiere Software. Imported video into Flash and skewed, rotated and duplicated.

Evaluation: Students thrilled by their creations and learned a great deal in the afternoon

2D Animation

Discussed with students the progress on their formative assessment from the week before. Demo'd everyone's assessment. Looked at the breakdown of the .fla files. Reflected on what was good, bad, difficult, how to do, etc. Students had not prepared paperwork as unsure of what to do for final animation. Discussed at length everybody's proposed animation. Discussed the advantages of working as a team and learning from each other. Gave example. Suggested to students that they arrange to meet one session in the week to futher their knowledge in 2D.

Evaluation: Although students had not produced expected target work for today I felt that we took immense steps forward in their learning and collaboration. Also I think it was good to demo their assessments as some of them had gone the extra mile with their work.

HN Graphics
Final DayStudents are completing and handing in their assessments for the Graphics Unit. Some very good work is appearing, however, on the whole work created before assessment is as good or better which surprised me. Still have a number of students who are more concerned about is it enough to pass rather than stating it is the best that they can do.

HN Graphics
20 November 2006

Students submitted their assessments. Still a large number of 'cows tails'.

Evaluation: Students keen to submit work but the majority just wish to meet criteria which is enough to pass rather than the very best work they can do.

2D Animation

Students were given a formative assessment to work through. This was comprehensive in its assessment of the students skills which should have been achieved during Block 1 of the unit. Students were being assessed on their skills as opposed to artistic ability. Most students were quite innovative with their application and most managed to complete about 80%. 2 students completed the task but it was a very basic interpretation.

I asked students to finish tasks by Thursday of this week and place on the network drive.

Evaluation: Students appeared to quite enjoy the assessment and attacked it with great enthusiasm. 3 students who had not attended intimated that they found assessment impossible but would try to carry out practice in order to achieve skills. 2 students did not turn up to assessment. One intimated that they were sick the other did not get in touch.

Graphics
Students worked on their assessment material. Facilitated and answered any queries that they had. Reflected on some of the work which had been submitted to Photobucket.
Evaluation: Students would like another site on which only their best work was displayed. This seemed like a good idea. Asked students if they would like to assess each others work. The general opinion appeared to be NO. They thought this would be too difficult and embarassing
for them to do this. They would like tutors to assess and give feedback.

HND 2D Animation

Students worked on their paperwork. I discussed orally with each individual their potential animation. Some students too ambitious for their skill level and others not ambitious enough.
Dem'd creation of rotating animation.

Evaluation: Good. Some students bit overwhelmed with assessment.

Lecture on Vector Graphics as prescribed by Napier

Students encouraged to talk about what is good about Flash. Dem'd numerous Flash websites and animations of last semester's students.

Dem'd the basics of Flash and students carried out something similar.

Students discussed what were the basic skills of Flash. Dem'd a few. Students who already knew Flash basics helped the students who knew nothing.

Evaluation: Students were very impressed by the package and wished to know more. I pointed out the best tutorials for them to learn in order to carry out assessment. Progress - excellent
Focus Meeting for HNC Multimedia

I was disappointed that no reps were present at the focus meeting held today in guidance and focus meeting was intimated yesterday in the Graphics Class. However the following is a summary of discussion

More space on the Network Drive - pref 2 gb of space for HN Students
MS Office update especially useful for PowerPoint
Video Update Package - Premiere 6 now rather dated as far as compression etc is concerned
Amount of Video Cameras insufficient as far as the amount of students borrowing
Projector for Smartboard blurred and small for viewing across room
Syncronise not utilised as cumbersome to set up for class where other students are not in the class utilise area
Some students enjoy learning in groups for stretching tutorials.
Students like the Lynda.com video tutorials

Comms
Students felt very strongly about noisey activity in Comms - find it very distracting if trying to read eg interpretation for assessment
Also think that there are too many students in class for one lecturer eg double class for one tutor where students are distributed thoughout a large room. Activities are very much group based and difficult for lecturer who was commended for her teaching ability to get around the groups.

Students would like Quark to be utilised within the course.
Insufficient seating in the cafe area of Media Space for breaks
Cleanliness and tidiness of the cafe area noted as a problem - allegations that immature art and design and drama students to blame

Intimated by emai to all HNC students that if there are any other points you would like mooted at the Course Team Meeting

Evaluation: Poor turnout and very motivated and committed group who turned up to focus meeting.
Monday 6 November 2006
HN Graphics

Students worked on their assessment tasks. I gave feedback on Bitmap and Vector Graphic Report. I discussed graphics with students which I thought were poor and suggested what could improve. Most of these students stated that they felt under pressure with amount of assessments for all subjects and were not submitting work that they thought great but work they thought might do.

Evaluation: Some assessment work not as good as that produced for exercises. Students keen to utilise Photoshop which they know more about than Illustrator but Illustrator better tool for the job for most tasks in the assessment. Students have forgotten how to do some techniques and referred to video tutorials and need for notes rather than me telling them.
Monday 6 November 2006
HND 2D Animation

Students worked on their assessments. Some students wished me to go over creation of a website in Flash which I did. Gave out my written notes. Reflected on previous animations as a class. Brainstormed as a class and students wrote on Smartboard what skills they though would be required to carry out final animation. Students mooted what animations they were considering for their assessment. Most assessments animations were linked to their final projects. I screened on Smartboard numerous animations and flash based web designs. Students discussed what they liked about each.

HN GRAPHICS

Students worked on their assessments for the unit. I showcased examples of websites which were different. Students categorised them according to whether they considered them traditional or futuristic.

Evaluation: Students worked well on their assessments. Two groups went out to take photographs. Students thought websites excellent examples of good practice.
Caron and I decided that we should get students to assemble websites they thought good/unusual/creative etc and print them out and place on walls of digital space in order that design techniques are around the students all the time.

HN GRAPHICS

Clarification of assessments took place. Selected Students made presentations and spoke about what progress they had made with their assessments and any problems they were having.

Visitors appeared in Media Space who are interested in Digital Media ie Museum Curator and Art Specialist. I showcased work on looping slideshow within Photobucket and they were very impressed by what they saw.

Evaluation: Some students were kept on task more with the pressure of potentially showcasing their work at the end of the afternoon. Demo's mostly good quality work which was somehow setting a standard for the rest to follow. Students worked very well. Students were very proud of their work being showcased while visitors were being shown around.

HND 2D ANIMATION

Discussion took place with students as to what construed a Specification/Treatment.
Research was carried out on the internet for details of animation specs. Concensus was reached by brainstorming and details of content posted on network drive of proposed content.

I encouraged students to look for good examples of animations and post them onto the Best Sites Wiki

Students created e-cards for Halloween and submitted them to Photobucket when complete.

Evaluation: Students participated well in brainstorming of spec. Students enjoyed creating e-card and thought this a possibility for assessment animation.
Reflection of Dunfermline and Halloween Cards should take place at next class.
